The pelican has long been a symbol of
Louisiana since the 1800s. The early settlers
believed it was a generous and nurturing bird. It
was said that when food was scarce, the mother bird
would stab her breast with her beak and feed some
of her blood to her young. That is what is being
depicted on the state flag.
